tbl partnered with the Asian Forum on CSR 2010. With over 340 delegates from almost 30 countries, it was a great place for the just-turned-three tbl platform to exchange notes with a wide array of CSR practitioners.
Below we share some photos of our experience of the event.
Conference on Corporate Governance, Strategy and Competitiveness
A conference on Corporate Governance, Strategy and Competitiveness was held in Karachi, November, 2010, organized by the Institute of Business Management. Amongst the objectives of the conference was to share best global and local practices and their applicability in Pakistan and to create linkages between industry and academia for capture of local case studies, possible research and inclusion of industry leaders on IoBMs board of studies.
In the issue paper, Mr. Javaid Ahmed, Sr. Fellow in Strategic Management at the Institute of Business Management drew attention to Pakistan’s chronic fall in ranking on many of the World Economic Forum’s indices specially Corporate Governance and Enterprise Strategic Competitiveness and the opportunity that presented to industry and academia to arrest and reverse the trend. By contrast, Pakistan’s management schools are ranked that suggests relative higher competitiveness which possibly indicates a role they can play in reversing other business trends.
Dr. John Sullivan, Executive Director of the Center for International Private Enterprise, Washington, in his keynote address, shared the evolution of good corporate governance in the world and the region. It was suggested that, as per best international practice, companies would add significant value to their governance, by including one appropriately experienced and qualified academic who is also a certified board director.
The discussion on Strategy revolved around operational achievements and efficiencies. The moderator, in spite of diplomatic efforts, was not quite successful in bringing the panelists to the platform of strategy and competitiveness. However, there was a willingness among most participants to have case studies on strategy prepared for their organizations and also offered to be on the board of studies for aligning management education to local needs.
